Kendra's Story

I work at an outpatient surgery facility as a Registered Nurse.  A Conceptus representative brought information about the Essure procedure into the facility and it really piqued my interest. Both of my children are in college and my job as a nursing supervisor is challenging and can be stressful. I fill my leisure time with boating, gardening, exercising and family time. I wanted a birth control that was permanent (tired of taking the pill) that had minimum recovery time. I didn’t want to have a tubal ligation because I didn’t want incisions or the pain following that type of surgery. I was looking for something less traumatic and I didn’t want to become pregnant in my early forties.

The procedure took about 30 minutes. At that time, my doctor had only done one Essure procedure and it was the person right before me. Because it was new to her, she chose to use general anesthesia. (I think I could have done it awake, but the surgeon wanted to keep me comfortable.) I had only slight cramping upon waking, took one pain pill, because I did not want it to get any worse, and was home in less than an hour. I slept for about 3 hours, got up took a shower, ate dinner, and went to an out-of-town football game. I sat on bleachers, yelled for my daughter’s team and enjoyed the game without any pain.  I had a great weekend and had only slight cramping the third day after the procedure.

The only disappointing thing was that my insurance did not cover all the costs associated with the follow-up HSG. I was out about $100.00 or so, but it was a great relief to know the procedure worked and I was assured I did not need to worry about birth control any more.

I also love the fact that I can wear my bathing suit and I have no scar. I tell everyone I know, “if you want a sterilization procedure, this is the way to go!” I would not hesitate to do it again.
